Lethargy may be an early sign of pregnancy - Adrienne Farricelli
As humans, dogs begin to exhibit signs of pregnancy. While only your vet can confirm pregnancy, there are some recognizable signs attentive owners may notice.

When it comes to canine pregnancy, owners may scratch their heads wondering if their dog is going to expect puppies or not. Whether the breeding was planned or accidental, there are two important factors to consider that may heighten the chances your beloved dog will be soon a mommy.

The first factor to consider is the day of breeding. Female dogs are particularly fertile at a specific time of their cycle. Typically a dog's cycle is composed of 21 days and is divided in three phases.

The first phase is called Pro-estrus and takes place when the dog experiences vaginal bleeding along with vaginal swelling. Typically Pro-estrus lasts an average of 7-10 days. Male dogs at this point become extremely interested in the dog but typically the female dog will be reluctant to mate.

The second phase is called Estrus. This is the ideal time for the dog to mate because she is actually fertile. The vaginal bleeding will have turned into a straw colored liquid. She will accept the male and allow him to mount.

The third and final phase is called Di-estrus and it signals that the fertile phase is over. The female at this point will be again reluctant to mate, however, males may still show interest.

If your dog has mated therefore, at the estrus phase which usually takes place 7-10 days after the bleeding has begun, chances are high your dog may have puppies on the way.

The other factor that will heighten chances of pregnancy is if you witnessed a "tie". A tie occurs when the male and female dog mate and remain in a "locked" position for a few minutes. A "tie" grants that sperm is successfully delivered increasing chances of pregnancy.

Having evaluated the odds of a possible pregnancy, now to signs that may suggest puppies are on the way. While these signs may suggest pregnancy they may also suggest a false pregnancy, another reason why it is best to have the vet check for sure.

Signs Your Dog May be Pregnant

  • Your dog may refuse food in the first weeks of pregnancy. This can be compared to morning sickness experienced by women.
  • A decrease in activity may be another sign. Your dog may lay around more than usual as she goes through important hormonal changes.
  • Nipples may appear slightly enlarged. Because this change is minimal, sometimes it is best to measure and compare nipple size before and after breeding.
  • Some dogs may become more affectionate and seek owner's attention more.

While these signs may be subtle, some experienced breeders are able to detect them because they deal with pregnant dogs often. However, the only way to know for sure as mentioned earlier, is to have your vet confirm pregnancy. There are 4 ways for a vet to confirm pregnancy in your dog:

  1. After 21-25 days have passed after breeding, Relaxin, a substance that confirms pregnancy may be detected in your dog's bloodwork.
  2. After 25 days, the puppy's heartbeats may be heard via stethoscope.
  3. After about 28 days your veterinarian may detect puppy embryos simply by palpating your dog's abdomen.
  4. After 45 days have passed after breeding, x-rays may successfully detect the puppy's skeletons.

As seen, there are various signs that may confirm or rule out your dog's pregnancy. While physical cues may be hard to detect and not much reliable, your veterinarian is ultimately the only and best source.

This was very helpful...I now believe that she is not pregnant.
She would have been fixed before her heat cycle but she has a female issue & the vet recommended her go through a heat cycle before I got her fixed. Now I can do just that.
Thx.

thanks that was great help .but my dogs nipples are very enlarged does this mean anything.

Adrienne Farricelli :
This could be a pretty evident sign of pregnancy if she was with a male dog during the fertile time of her estrus. However, only a vet through diagnostic tests may be able to give you an accurate response. It could also be a sign of false pregnancy. You can ask your vet for a Relaxin test to check if she is pregnant.

Hi, I really don't know if my dog is pregnant.... She shows the signs of restlessness, seeking more attention, decrease and sudden increases in appetite, she is sleeping more, ALOT more than she used to, and her nipples are growing, but there is no vaginal bleeding as far as I can tell, or as far as I'm concered, and going to the vet is a hard option financially, and I was wondering are there any other alternatives to detect a pregnancy so that I can be prepared for it.....
THANKS...!!!!!

When my dog, Sweet Pea, was pregnant the first time, I knew nothing about how to tell if she was pregnant. My sister insisted she that her nipples wouldn't enlarge until the very last days before giving birth. So I couldn't possible tell pregnancy by looking at that. But I knew something was up b/c her nipples looked the tiniest bit bigger. Also, she became very protective of me. A dog that was friendly towards everyone started biting anyone she didn't know if they came near me. Sure enough, she was pregnant and had 3 beautiful puppies. I know she mated this time and there was a tie that happened just this morning. I'm going to measure her nipples tomorrow and then measure them in about 3 weeks to see if they are bigger. This article is helpful!

I only wish I knew signs of labor. The last time I had no idea when she was due because I didn't know when she mated or how long dogs stay pregnant. I let her outside to go to the bathroom and she never came back that night. The next morning I called for her again. She came out and I saw that she had given birth under our house. It had rained that night and I was so afraid the puppies had drowned. I had to lock her up and get my nephew to crawl under the house and get them. Luckily they were all alive. I know that this time she mated and had a tie this morning. If she gets pregnant what are the signs of labor?

This has been quite helpful, my dog seems to have all the signs... I was over with her (while she was having her period---the end of it) at my friend's house who has a male dog, and we tried to keep them separate, so they weren't in the "lock" position for more than a few seconds or maybe half a minute, but could this have been enough to get her pragnant? I want her to have puppies, just not right now, so I am quite worried...

not bad. But need more info. When a dog begins to lick the throw pillows and bringing them to me? Staring at me? Following me? Her nipples are in sight. She is not my dog, per se. She belongs to my roomate. He does not believe me when I tell him that she is expecting. Should I set up a quiet place for her? I have had many cats and have assited in births. But never a dog. She is a purebred chocolate lab. Only a year old. If I get any usefull information maybe I will join Suite 101. Never heard of it before. Just need help from an interested vet out there that is not just in it for the money.

Unless you are a registered breeder, breeding for the betterment of a particular breed, then your dogs should not be having puppies. People who think it is a fun thing to breed their two unsterilised "pets" and make a bit of money from selling the puppies from their backyard or to a petshop are cruel and ignorant. It is time these 'backyard breeders' were stopped.

unfortunitly I can not take my dog to a vet due to the fact that she is a wolf hybrid which I did not know when I rescued her at & months old. My fathers dog may have gotten her pregnant and I'm trying to find out if she is since NO vet in the area will see her, so i have been unable to get her fixed. Normally I keep her inside durring her heat cycle but here at my dad's I can not do so.

Well, it helped a little but, I am still not sure if she is pregnant. Her and my male matted for about 3 weeks then I noticed her bleeding a week later. Then her stomach was enlarged for a few days then it went down. She doesn't look pregnant except for the fact that her nipples are hanging more each day and she rubs her self on the ground every time I take them for a walk. She is more protective of her bed and she hides food but, she doesn't eat a lot. Right now I can't take her to the vet because I lost my job. What do you think? Do you think she is pregnant?

A decrease in activity may be another sign. Your dog may lay around more than usual as she goes through important hormonal changes.
Nipples may appear slightly enlarged. Because this change is minimal, sometimes it is best to measure and compare nipple size before and after breeding.
Some dogs may become more affectionate and seek owner's attention more.

uh-oh! My dog has developed some signs and at first I thought maybe she's just different because she's been on steroids for an allergy she has. Now reading this article I'm almost definately convinced she's pregnant. About a week back she became sick and very lathargic, she vomited and wouldn't eat for the rest of the day. Now she seems to be laying about a lot, not running around like she usually does, her nipples look engorged which I thought was the steroids and she seems to be licking me more than usual...

This article has really helped me, with understanding that my dog, (Yorkie) may or may not be pregnant. If she isn't then it is a false one. Only her vet will be able to tell me. She was only around my sisters' dog, a short period of time, just can't believe she is pregnant. We wated her most of the time. It was her first real time she was in heat, and it was bad. :)
Love the articles'. Thanks they were of great help.

Okay this is going to sound weird but don't shoot me down.

My dog (female) is fixed. I've always had speculations that the people at Paws didn't do the procedure correctly or it didn't work. Her nipples are slightly enlarged, she goes to a daycare with lots of other dogs who are supposed to be fixed but I know for a fact, some aren't. Her belly is slightly more rounded than usual, it's pink, she actually prefers the other person I live with but now freaks out when either of us leave when before she would at most whine. She refused food for 6 days starting 2 days after her last doggy daycare visit. She has always been lazy but now more than when she was 3 months old. Is my dog pregnant?

(The half part is there because I accidentaly just woke her up from her 3rd nap. Anyway, she sleeps alot! Are these signs that my dog is pregnant? P.S. She is 1 yr. and seven moths old! And her nipples are kinda..... well.... I guess you'd say.... Squishy? Like they have milk in them...... So is she pegnant?

I am in total shock right now. We took our five year old german rott to the vet on Feb 25th because she appeared to be pregnant... The vet informed us after filling her abdominal area and giving her an x ray that the dog had heart worms in her arteries which made her swell and she was full of fluid... So he prescribed her 1 tablet 1 a day -20mg enalapril,100mg doxycycline-5 tablets twice a day, and 40mg furosemide-3 tablets a day... She has been taking 14 pills daily since Feb. 25th and today it is March 14...... This morning when my father went to give her pills her noticed that she wouldnt come out... he heard whining and to our surprise she gave birth to 10 rott puppies.......He was in total shock when i called and i asked should i still give her the pills and they said yes... but i am sort of concerned because she had three shots on that same day and now he wants me to continue to give her the pills, he said that it wouldnt hurt her or the babies but my mind is still wondering because he did not see the puppies in the first day.. Keep in my I seperated her from the sire on Feb. 25, as we returned home, what do you think, he couldnt see the puppies because of the fluid? Should I continue to give her the 14 pills daily or just wait til we see that her puppies are good and healthy? Or will the puppies be fine and we should just continue to give her the pills.....? She has another doctor appointment on March 25th but I dont know if I am going to take her because she still may be nursing...... What do you all think about this?

my dog is a german shepherd.
I bred her nearly 4 weeks ago, she looks fat, and eats more.
and her nipples look sore but i just thought that was because she has been in season.

Hi, I am the proud owner of a beautiful yet slightly tubby beagle. About a month or two back she disappeared on her walk, she came back about 10 minutes later with a male collie cross on her tail. She now seems larger than ever, her nipples are a bit swollen, she is licking her private area alot, is becoming lazy and lagging behind during walks and becoming very sweet and always looking for a cuddle. My mother and I both believe that she is pregnant but are not sure. We do not know when she is due as this our first time with a pregnant dog. We do not have the money to take her to the vets to see for sure so we need all the help we can get. What do you think???

Its good - first signs I noticed were my dogs ribs were wider (after 2 weeks of pregnancy) I asked the vet why this was and she said because the organs are pushed up to alllow growth of the uterus so the ribs are pushed out. Nipples get larger and pinker. Going off food then ravenous at about 4 weeks. Hair falling out at nipple area and clear discharge from vulva.

This was extremely helpful as it gave visual clues that a female dog may be pregnant. Most of the other links I found only gave the usual signs that occur later in pregnancy, and the suggestion to see a vet.

Excellent article. My question is that I had my Yorkie X-Rays taken at 45 days. The vet said no puppies so we resigned to a false pregnancy. We are now on day 51 after tie and we have movement. Is it possible that the xray was wrong. I welcome all info on this one. I want to be prepared if she is indeed going to whelp next week end.

My dog has all the signs of pregnancy except she's eating the same or more. However its been 30 days since she was in heat, I called my vet and she said they don't do pregnancy test, what do you'll think?

My Am Bulldog was bred the first day in Feb. and she has changed her eating habits back and forth and she has been like a magnet to my leg, she has slightly swollen teats and milk glands and has been off and on dripping a clear fluid from her vagina for about two weeks now. She has become snippy to my other bully pup. She has an appointment to be Xrayed soon but I just wonder since her tummy is not enlarged is this a falsie? She was bred the 14th day of her heat cycle and had a successful tie for about 40 mins.
